
Legendary explorer’s work has inspired generations of women scientists
CLEARWATER, FL (May 1, 2025) — Clearwater Marine Aquarium (CMA) is thrilled to present “An Evening with Dr. Sylvia Earle,” National Geographic’s Explorer at Large, and one of the world’s leading oceanographers. Known as “Her Deepness,” to her fans, Dr. Earle will be the guest speaker at “Echoes of the Ocean: A Marine Life Speaker Series“on May 20, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at CMA.
The event will provide an incredible opportunity for the public to hear directly from the legendary explorer and scientist whose pioneering work has shaped the field of marine conservation and inspired generations of women scientists and explorers. The event will feature a speaker session with Dr. Earle from 7- 8 p.m. and question and answer discussion from 8:00 to 8:30 p.m.
“This is an incredible opportunity to hear from one of the most important and influential scientists of our time,” said Dr. James “Buddy” Powell, Executive Director of Clearwater Marine Aquarium’s Research Institute and Chief Zoological Officer at CMA. “Sylvia Earle’s lifetime of achievements has not only revolutionized marine science and conservation but has also opened doors for countless women to pursue careers in oceanography and environmental protection.”
The evening will highlight Dr. Earle’s extensive career, including her work as the first female Chief Scientist at National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), her groundbreaking explorations of the ocean, and her leadership in marine conservation efforts.
Known for her remarkable achievements, Dr. Earle has earned the title “Her Deepness” for her extensive underwater explorations and deep-sea dives, which have garnered global attention and a deeper understanding of the world’s oceans. Dr. Earle has championed the establishment of Hope Spots, special places critical to the health of the ocean, one of which is located adjacent to her hometown of Dunedin, Florida.
