Clearwater Marine Aquarium (CMA) is proud to announce it has been awarded over $31,000 through the Sea Turtle Grants Program, funded by a portion of the proceeds from Florida’s Sea Turtle Specialty License Plate. This vital support is enabling CMA to repair critical necropsy equipment, including the walk-in carcass freezer and cooler, which were damaged during Hurricane Helene.
The storm surge resulting from Hurricane Helene on September 26, 2024 caused CMA to flood with 3-4 feet of bay and sewage water, reaching the necropsy room and damaging the carcass freezer and cooler. Necropsies, the animal equivalent of human autopsies, are important in determining cause of death, investigating disease, and identifying mortality trends in sea turtle populations. These insights play a crucial role in advancing sea turtle conservation and improving rehabilitation practices.
The grant funding is specifically supporting repairs to CMA’s carcass freezer and cooler, including replacement of damaged electrical systems and elevating the equipment several feet to help safeguard against future flooding. These upgrades will allow CMA to return to normal operations in performing sea turtle necropsies and ensure long-term resilience for this important work.
Florida’s Sea Turtle Specialty License Plate was created in 1997 to promote the conservation and protection of Florida’s sea turtles and their habitats. The Sea Turtle Grants Program distributes funds annually to organizations across the state that are committed to sea turtle research, education, and rehabilitation.
