Knox’s Story
A nine-foot manatee named Knox and her calf were rescued from Cooper River, Charleston, South Carolina by SeaWorld, Clearwater Marine Aquarium Research Institute, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, National Marine Mammal Foundation, South Carolina Aquarium, South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, University of Florida and U.S. Navy on November 8, 2021. They were rescued due to cold stress and received critical rehabilitation care at the SeaWorld. Knox and her male calf, Iguana, were released on December 1, 2021 at the Port Everglades discharge canal in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. CMARI tagged Knox for their manatee Northern Atlantic Coast study along the East Coast of the United States and as part of a cooperative study with state and federal agencies to assess manatee movement and habitat use as a result of the Unusual Mortality Event. Knox weighed 1090 pounds at her release and her calf, Iguana, weighed 150 pounds and was just under five feet long.
All manatee work was conducted under USFWS Research Permit # MA37808A-2.
