16 Critically Endangered Turtles Airlifted to Tampa To Be Rehabbed at Clearwater Marine Aquarium

In a collaborative effort to save the lives of 16 critically endangered Kemp’s ridley sea turtles, Clearwater Marine Aquarium (CMA) welcomed the arrival of these cold-stunned reptiles on Tuesday, Dec 5. Transported from the New England Aquarium (NEAQ) facility in Quincy, MA, the turtles were severely impacted by the frigid waters of New England, experiencing a condition known as ‘cold-stun.’

Wheat is a large, juvenile green sea turtle who was entangled and ingested fishing line offshore Terra Ceia in Manatee County. Wheat appears very debilitated with several large fibropapilloma tumors present.

First North Atlantic Right Whale Mom and Calf Pair Sighted in 2023-2024 Calving Season

Researchers with Clearwater Marine Aquarium Research Institute (CMARI) have sighted the first North Atlantic right whale mom and calf pair of the 2023-2024 season off the coast of South Carolina. The mother, Juno (Catalog #1612), estimated to be over 38 years old, has successfully given birth to her 8th documented calf.

Diamondback Terrapin – Hospital Patient – Pearl

Pearl is an adult, female diamondback terrapin who was found floating near a seawall in Palm Harbor with carapace injuries. Pearl was lethargic, underweight, and had minimal use of her rear legs at intake examination. Pearl’s initial treatment includes antibiotics and fluid therapy.

Today, Clearwater Marine Aquarium unveils ArtSEA Conservation, an art exhibit featuring international, national and community artists, to show the connection between art and marine conservation. The aquarium’s fourth floor will be transformed into an art gallery where marine mammal paintings, sculptures and aquariums are on display along with videos featuring Clearwater Marine Aquarium Research Institute’s fieldwork.
