Bagel’s Story
Bagel is a juvenile green sea turtle who was found floating near the Steinhatchee River in Taylor county on Dec. 31. Bagel has minor fibropapilloma tumors present and no other external injuries or abnormalities. Bagel’s initial treatment plan consists of vitamins and fluid therapy.

Bagel’s first swim test did show floating and lethargic behaviors. We will gradually increase their swim time as they improve.

Bagel went for a CT scan, no obvious internal tumors were seen! We are giving fluids daily and monitoring their appetite.

Bagel is starting to show interest in food. They are able to be in a shallow pool all day and overnight. We will start incorporating deep water swim time over the next few days.

Bagel is able to be in deep water all day and overnight. Bagel is still showing abnormal swimming behaviors with resting at the surface. However, they are able to dive down and forage off the bottom of the pool.

Bagel had a quick procedure to remove a small eye tumor. They recovered well day of and are showing no issues.

Bagel was successfully released in Taylor county thanks to the help of UF’s Marine Rescue Team!
All marine turtle footage taken in Florida was obtained with the approval of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) under conditions not harmful to marine turtles. Footage was acquired while conducting authorized conservation activities pursuant to FWC MTP-23/24-172.
