Bonsai’s Story

Bonsai is a large juvenile, almost subadult green sea turtle, who was found out of habitat in a brackish water source in Homosassa. Bonsai was monitored by our partners at University of Florida Marine Animal Response. This area was difficult to navigate and see due to water clarity and location. However, once an opportunity arose, Bonsai was rescued by UF, and they were transported to CMA for rehabilitation on May 7. Bonsai is otherwise in good body condition. We are hopeful for a quick turnaround!

INTERESTING FACT: Naming theme: Trees!

Treatment Updates

5.9.25

Bonsai’s first swim test showed no abnormal behaviors. They are showing interest in food, resting on the bottom, and able to in water overnight! We were monitoring their electrolytes due to exposure to low salinity water.

5.22.25

Bonsai was moved to a bigger, deeper pool. They are eating well. They were started on oral antibiotics based on recent labwork.

6.17.25

Bonsai was cleared and successfully released!

All marine turtle footage taken in Florida was obtained with the approval of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) under conditions not harmful to marine turtles. Footage was acquired while conducting authorized conservation activities pursuant to FWC MTP-23/24-172.
