Citrine’s Story

Citrine is a juvenile green sea turtle who was found washed ashore in Duval county on Jan. 24. Citrine was transferred to CMA from Whitney Lab on Jan. 25 due to space limitations they were experiencing with recent strandings. Citrine has a heavy load of barnacles on their carapace, thin body condition, and a moderate load of fibropapilloma tumors.

Treatment Updates

1.27.24

Citrine’s first swim test showed no concerning or abnormal swimming behaviors in water. We will increase their swim time as they improve. We are continuing to do glucose checks and giving fluids as needed.

Citrine is able to be in deep water all day and overnight. They are starting to show some interest in food.

Citrine went for a CT scan. Next step will be to do an endoscopy to check for esophageal tumors. We are continuing to do glucose checks and giving fluids as needed and monitoring their appetite.

Citrine’s endoscopy showed no obvious concerns. Eating well and diet has been increased.

Citrine went for a recheck CT, no obvious internal tumors seen. They will be ready for surgery soon!

Citrine successfully had their eye tumors and majority of their skin tumors removed! We will be monitoring their recovery over the next few days. They will be on eye medications to help promote healing.

Citrine was successfully released at Ormond Beach in Volusia county!


All marine turtle footage taken in Florida was obtained with the approval of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) under conditions not harmful to marine turtles. Footage was acquired while conducting authorized conservation activities pursuant to FWC MTP-23/24-172.
