Arrival at Clearwater Marine Aquarium
Xeno, a sub-adult loggerhead, came to CMA on September 17, 2016. She was found about 15 miles offshore, floating and unable to dive, by our very own dive coordinator Brian Mahardy! Lucky for her he was with captain Don (who also brought us Kreacher) and they were able to bring her to us via boat. She presented with slight edema (puffiness) and moderate epibiota coverage on her carapace.
Treatment
We were fortunate enough to be able to take her to our good friends at Morton Plant for an x-ray the same day she arrived at CMA. The x-ray revealed an extensive amount of shell-like material in her GI tract that may be the cause for her buoyancy problem. Overall she was in good body condition weighing in at around 130 pounds. She was given a series of vitamin injections and daily glucose checks and fluids.
Cleared for Sea Turtle Release
Xeno was able to pass the shell material rather quickly (about 5 pounds worth!). After completing her round of antibiotics and being dewormed she has been cleared for release by Dr. Shelly! As an added bonus based on her size she has also been selected to be fitted with a satellite tag so we are able to track her once she is released. Thanks Dan and Sea Turtle Conservancy!
Good luck out there Xeno we look forward to following your journey!
