Grissini‘s Story

Grissini is a juvenile green sea turtle who was rescued on July 8 from Taylor County. It was reported that Grissini had difficulty staying submerged and showed buoyancy issues. Upon intake, Grissini was active, has a good body condition and minor fibropapilloma tumors present. Initial radiographs and CT scan revealed possible gastrointestinal issues that could be the cause of the buoyancy.

Treatment Updates

7.9.23

Grissini’s first swim test did show buoyancy issues. We will continue to monitor and increase their swim time as they improve. Grissini was placed in a shallow pool.

7.14.23

Grissini is able to be in a kiddie pool all day and overnight. We are continuing to do glucose checks and giving fluids as needed. We are also monitoring Grissini’s appetite.

7.18.23

Based on CT findings, an endoscopy was performed to help better visualize the issues seen on CT. Based on the endoscopy, a new treatment plan was placed with fluid therapy, GI stimulation medications, and anti-parasitics. We will continue to monitor for defecations and appetite.

7.31.23

Recheck X-rays were completed, there is no sign of improvement. Our veterinarian will conduct an exploratory surgery this week to assess GI and potential issues.

8.2.23

An exploratory surgery was performed by our veterinarian. There was an obstruction and large fecal impaction. Due to this, the damage to the GI was severe and Grissini was humanely euthanized. A necropsy was performed to learn more about their case.

All marine turtle footage taken in Florida was obtained with the approval of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) under conditions not harmful to marine turtles.
