EXAM FINDINGS
Very emaciated (thin) at intake. Poor body condition and heavily covered in epibiota. Paps around both eyes, neck and inguinal area (groin). Also lethargic.
INITIAL TREATMENT
Vitamins, iron and fluids were administered.

Hungry Hippo’s Story

Hungry Hippo is a green sea turtle who was found on July 8, 2018, floating near the southwest side of the Howard Franklin Bridge. He was moderately covered in epibiota, which was mostly just algae. He was in poor body condition and lethargic. He also has paps around both eyes, neck, front flippers and inguinal area.

Glucose was normal, receiving fluids and antibiotics.

Diet increased.

Started tube feeding to increase calorie intake.

Had surgery to remove eye pap tumors

Currently on eye drops to help the eyes heal after surgery.

Continuing to monitor appetite. Went for a recheck CT, clear to have surgery for tumor removal.


All marine turtle footage taken in Florida was obtained with the approval of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) under conditions not harmful to marine turtles. Footage was acquired while conducting authorized conservation activities pursuant to FWC MTP-18-172.
