Mario Kart’s Story

Mario Kart is a juvenile Kemp’s ridley who was rescued on July 29, 2018. Mario Kart was hooked by a fisherman and the hook got caught in his right front flipper. The fisherman brought the turtle to the pier at the Seminole Boat Ramp where it was picked up and taken to Clearwater Marine Aquarium. He was triaged upon arrival and the hook was removed after receiving X-rays. This is why it is important to use circle hooks rather than J hooks, to reduce the injury of our wildlife!

Interesting Fact
Mario Kart is much lighter in color than the other Kemp’s ridleys we have in rehab.

All marine turtle footage taken in Florida was obtained with the approval of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) under conditions not harmful to marine turtles. Footage was acquired while conducting authorized conservation activities pursuant to FWC MTP-18-172.
