On December 2, 2017, a fisherman found two turtles – Snapdragon and Thistle – entangled together in monofilament line in the water, both with fibropapilloma tumors. He collected both turtles and called the Clearwater Marine Aquarium stranding line. Rescue personnel from the aquarium met the fisherman and brought the turtles back to the aquarium for triage and care.

On September 13, 2017, a juvenile green turtle with fibropapilloma tumors was found entangled in fishing line by the Skyway Fishing Pier in Pinellas County, Florida. CMA’s Rescue Team was contacted, picked up the turtle, and brought it back to the aquarium for triage and care.

On October 30, 2017, a fisherman found a juvenile Kemp’s ridley floating in the Cotee River, Pasco County, Florida with a deep wound on its carapace.

On October 22, 2017, a juvenile green turtle with fibropapilloma tumors was found washed up in the mangroves. Fishing line was loosely entangling the turtle’s body, trapping it in the mangrove roots.

On September 23, 2017, a boater in Crystal River, Hernando County, Florida, found two green sea turtles entangled together in fishing line — later named Honeysuckle and Ivory.

On June 27, 2017, fishermen found a sub-adult loggerhead floating near Tierra Verde in Pinellas County. It was covered in barnacles, and seemed very lethargic.

On July 9, a fisherman found a small, juvenile green sea turtle in Holiday, Pasco County, Florida with external fibropapilloma tumors, and fishing line entangling its left front flipper and around its neck.
