Green Sea Turtle Release – Largo

Released Animals Updated January 16, 2019 Posted January 2, 2017

sea turtle release

Largo

Green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas)
Release Date
August 16, 2016

Largo is a green sea turtle, who was found on February 23, 2015, near Three Rooker Island. Largo was washed up onshore with fibropapilloma tumors present and mild barnacle growth on the carapace. He was also very emaciated. Largo was moderately dehydrated and lethargic so we started him on fluids and antibiotics. A few days later, we began to tube feed Largo and a few weeks later, we began to offer food.

On December 30th, 2015 Largo underwent surgery to remove the pap tumors surrounding his flippers, neck and eyes. His recovery from surgery went well, but he did develop tumor re-growth on his eyes. On April 1st 2016, Largo went on a trip to the University of Florida for special eye treatment to remove those eye tumors. After recovering for a few more months, Largo was cleared for release by our veterinarian on August 10th, 2016.

He was released early morning on Wednesday, August 17th, 2016. Good luck out in the big blue Largo!
