An otter kit (baby otter) was rescued Sunday evening, January 28, 2018, after a resident found the otter kit in their backyard. The resident removed the animal from the yard, placed it in a box, and then contacted the Clearwater Marine Aquarium (CMA) Rescue Team.

Large Number of Sea Turtles Impacted by Cold Rehabilitated and Ready for Release

Since January 3, we have had over 70 live sea turtle intakes from Pinellas and the surrounding counties due to cold weather effects. In most of the cases, these sea turtles were already compromised with viruses, boat strikes and buoyancy issues. Low water temperatures and high winds can cause already sick sea turtles to become even more lethargic, and many have been found floating causing this influx of intakes to our facility.

Sea Turtle Hospital Patient – Zahara

On December 17, a juvenile green turtle was found floating at the surface of the water, with a few small fibropapilloma tumors on its flippers. Clearwater Marine Aquarium’s Rescue Team was called in to collect the turtle and bring it back to CMA for immediate triage and care.

Sea Turtle Hospital Patient – Snapdragon

On December 2, 2017, a fisherman found two turtles – Snapdragon and Thistle – entangled together in monofilament line in the water, both with fibropapilloma tumors. He collected both turtles and called the Clearwater Marine Aquarium stranding line. Rescue personnel from the aquarium met the fisherman and brought the turtles back to the aquarium for triage and care.
