Sea Turtle Hospital Patient – Lotus

On October 22, 2017, a juvenile green turtle with fibropapilloma tumors was found washed up in the mangroves. Fishing line was loosely entangling the turtle’s body, trapping it in the mangrove roots.

Eric Jacobs is a Sergeant in the 641 Regional Support Group U.S. Army and has recently returned from deployment in Kuwait and Afghanistan. Winter, one of our three resident dolphins, has provided inspiration to his family. His wife Julie, and two children Jadon and Aleena, were inspired by Winter to never give up in hard times. Just like Winter never gave up when she lost her tail, the Jacobs family never gave up while Eric was deployed, despite how hard this was for them.

Vanilla Wafer has now once again been cleared for release! She was returned home on Tuesday, November 7 at Honeymoon Island State Park. This marks the 25th sea turtle Clearwater Marine Aquarium has released in 2017.

Apple Jacks, a sub-adult green sea turtle, was originally found February 28, 2017, in Lee County, FL with a large wound on the carapace, believed to be caused by a boat strike, as well as fibropapilloma tumors.

Sea Turtle Grant for ATV Beach Patrol

Clearwater Marine Aquarium (CMA) was fortunate to be funded in whole by a grant awarded from the Sea Turtle Grants Program in order to purchase an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) for beach patrols. This vehicle will allow better access to beaches for surveying and help increase our rescue team response time.
